what are “patterns of safety”?

think about a consistent family vacation, an annual vacation that your family takes to the same place every year.

some theorize that a pattern like this develops a valuable psychological feeling of safety for children. This is what I call a “pattern of safety”.

this feeling of safety when going on a consistent annual vacation is the exact same feeling the most successful projects , communities, and businesses consistently generate.

a pattern of safety can be as simple as going to the same pizzeria with a friend every tuesday.

why is it important for businesses?

lets talk about a hypothetical pizzeria, we can call it tony’s pizza. tony’s pizza is open every tuesday @6pm for my friend and i to meet and talk after work. the consistency of the pizzeria makes us feel safe.

in fact, tony’s pizza is open every day. even better, it opens and closes at the exact same times on every day of the week.

tony’s pizza has many regular customers like my friend and i, meeting at all different times of the week, getting a slice, and talking to one another. if something comes up for me or my friend and we can’t meet, then we will cancel for that week. however, we never cancel because tony’s pizza is closed. tony’s pizza is always open.
