Tech in 2025

Growing in the tech industry is hard. Just keeping a job is already hard when there are mass layoffs, and it is really hard to even get in as a junior software engineer. With LLMs, software engineers are questioning whether they will have a job in the next few years.

There is a lot of doom and gloom, but the truth is that technology people will always be needed in a business. (Business people don’t want to be directly running and accountable for the technology outcomes without the background.)

Golden Goose

Tech forward companies are looking for a golden goose. A golden goose is going to return the biggest results to them (even if they don’t know it).

A golden goose :

a) Does what a company needs within price constraints, even if ambiguous.

b) If the business side gets confused, stays aligned.

c) Builds code that regular geese can manage and even extend.

d) Does follow on projects building on top of the first projects.

e) Says no, isn’t just a yes goose.

f) Asks for resources, isn’t afraid of swiping the company credit card.

Their projects compound in value. Every year, the projects get bigger, and build off the past projects.

They may want to do it for less, but they have multiple objectives.

Sometimes, they want their projects to be extendable, to have a broader design in mind.

Negotiating isn’t inherently fair.

The salaries people make.

The number of relevant companies they can work for.

The narrowing skills people build, specialty.

The above are very small, finite, discrete.

Inefficiency

The job market isn’t the stock market, it is an inefficient market.

It isn’t like the stock market where prices are being renegotiated every day!

Golden Eagle

A golden eagle does what a golden goose does, but also masters the job market.

They have the skills to execute, and the attitude that allow a golden goose to succeed on a project.

However, if they are at a fruit stand, they aren’t going to let the vendor charge whatever they want and just take it.

They are going to apply their ingenuity to create shopping opportunities.
